Discover your Writer’s Voice

Storytelling (also known as personal narrative or live lit) taps into your experiences. What memorable stories do you have to tell? This interactive workshop starts off with Storyteller Victoria Reeves performing a Moth-style tale. Next you’ll learn how to write (and possibly share) your own true story. Finally, lists of local open-mics and curated storytelling shows will be provided - so you can explore this fun genre with family and friends.

No writing or performance skills necessary. Open to everyone!

WORKSHOP DETAILS:

Storytelling (also known as personal narrative, creative nonfiction or live lit) taps into one’s life experience for ideas. The Discover your Inner Storyteller workshop will begin with a 6 minute Moth-style story performance. Patrons will then learn how storytelling uses tools from fiction (character, conflict, scene, and conclusion) to craft an engaging, true story. Using generative exercises and time for practice, patrons will apply what they have learned and practice telling their story to a partner.

FURTHER LEARNING:

Libraries can provide a cart with books by the original oral historian Studs Terkel (Race, Working, The Good War), Storycraft, Jack Hart’s Second Edition: The Complete Guide to Writing Narrative Nonfiction or any other storytelling books they have available to check out. Victoria will also provide lists of local curated shows and free open mics. Patrons can either attend to hear true stories or perhaps hop on stage and share their own at a Do Not Submit Open Mic across Chicagoland.
